Southwell Ramblers Autumn break in 2019 was to Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast. The group stayed at the HF Holidays house in Larpool Hall. All our members who took part were grateful to Pamela for organising the break away for us.

On each day there was a long walk and a short walk for members. On the Saturday the long walk group took a bus to Robin Hood’s Bay and Sandy led a walk back along the coast path and Cleveland Way to Whitby.

The coast path passes through Boggle Hole where there is the option to walk along the beach at low tide. Unfortunately the tide was too high at the time the group was there. Our picture shows some of the group debating how long they would have to wait for the tide to drop. In the event the walk continued along the path at the top of the cliffs.
How long before the tide drops?
On Saturday the shorter walk group led by Pamela walked from Larpool Hall to Stainsacre and then back along the coast path to Whitby. On Sunday the weather forecast was for rain and only the long walk group decided to go out. Christine led the group to Ruswarp station and we took the train to Grosmont which is where the North Yorks Moors Railway joins the Network Rail system. The opportunity was taken to watch the departure of a steam hauled train full of holidaymakers. The route back to Whitby was along the Esk Valley Way which was very different from the coastal scenery of the day before. The Esk Valley Way runs through very attractive countryside, although the soggy conditions did not show it at its best. There was compensation of occasional glimpses of the North Yorks Moors Railway steam trains on the line down the valley.
